Lori... you are right - for many reasons, it was inappropriate for the other trainer to "butt in"...joe----- Original Message -----From: Lori San MartinSent: Friday, July 03, 2009 4:57 PMSubject: [Personal-Fitness-Trainer] How would you handle this?
Hello fellow trainers,
I had an incident happen in the gym I work at part time and would like your thoughts and feelings about it. I was showing a young client how to balance on a stability ball when this other trainer asked if she could "jump in". I was taken aback and just said yes. She left her client, came over and proceeded to show my client another way to climb up on the ball and instructed me to spot her in another angle from what I was doing. What she showed me was fine, she is an excellent trainer. But, boy did it conjure up some things in me!
First of all, there is no doubt that I sometimes go to a place where I am not as confident as I should be. I know I am a good trainer in my way. Each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses. I seem to attract people who do very well with me. Yet, this trainer brought up some insecure feelings in me. My first thought was that my client will think I don't know as much as her and "make me look bad". I have since worked this through an dealt with my own self doubts and worries as to "what others think of me". I know I am good and I even think though her method on the ball was fine, I think mine was better...for me. And, for my client. But, I still feel astounded that she would "butt' in like that. What do you all think of this? Would you ever do this to another trainer? I wouldn't!!!

PS Next time I'll thank her for her offer and say no.
